SAM.gov Registration — What Veterans Need to Know

What is SAM.gov and why do I need it?

SAM.gov (System for Award Management) is the official federal database of businesses eligible to receive government contracts and grants. Without an active registration, you cannot be awarded any federal contract — period. Registration is free and takes about 1–3 business days to activate.

What's a UEI number?

The Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) replaced DUNS numbers in April 2022. It's a 12-character alphanumeric code that identifies your business in the federal system. You get your UEI automatically when you register at SAM.gov — it's free.

What happens if my SAM registration expires?

If your registration lapses, you cannot receive new contract awards or payments on active contracts. Renewal takes time, so set a calendar reminder 60 days before your expiration date. This tool will show you exactly when you expire.

What's the difference between SDVOSB and VOSB?

SDVOSB (Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business) requires at least 51% ownership by a veteran with a service-connected disability. VOSB requires 51% veteran ownership without the disability requirement. SDVOSB gets first priority on set-aside contracts under the VA Rule of Two.

How do I register in SAM.gov?

Go to sam.gov, create an account, and click "Register Entity." You'll need your EIN/TIN, NAICS codes, and bank account info for electronic payments. Registration is free — never pay a third party to register you.
