Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Post-9/11 GI Bill housing allowance based on?
The Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) is based on the DoD Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for an E-5 with dependents at the ZIP code of your school. Full-time students receive the full rate; half-time students receive 50%; online-only students receive a national average rate (approximately $988/month in 2026). Rates vary significantly by location — schools in high-cost cities like San Francisco or NYC have much higher BAH than rural schools. Use the VA's GI Bill Comparison Tool at va.gov to look up your exact school.
Can I transfer my GI Bill to my children or spouse?
Yes, if you're on active duty, you may transfer unused Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to eligible dependents (spouse or children). You must have served at least 6 years and agree to serve at least 4 more years from the date of transfer. Transfers must be approved through the DoD's Transfer of Education Benefits (TEB) system before you separate. Once transferred, your dependent receives the same rates you would receive, based on your eligibility percentage.
What happens if I have remaining GI Bill benefits after graduation?
For veterans discharged on or after January 1, 2013, Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits never expire. If you have months remaining, you can use them for a second degree, graduate school, professional certifications, on-the-job training (OJT), apprenticeships, or even flight training. The benefit follows you as long as you remain eligible. If still on active duty, you may also transfer remaining months to a dependent.
