Who qualifies for DIC benefits?

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is available to surviving spouses, dependent children, and dependent parents of veterans who died on active duty or whose death was caused by a service-connected disability. Surviving spouses must have been married to the veteran for at least one year, or have a child with the veteran, and must not have remarried (unless remarriage occurred after age 57).

What is the base DIC rate for 2026?

The 2026 base DIC rate for surviving spouses is $1,612.75 per month. Additional payments are available if the veteran had a 100% rating for 8 or more continuous years before death (+$319.17/month), if the surviving spouse has a dependent child, or if the surviving spouse requires Aid & Attendance or is housebound.

Can I receive both DIC and Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) payments?

Yes. Since 2023, surviving military spouses can receive both DIC and the full SBP annuity simultaneously. Previously, DIC was offset dollar-for-dollar against SBP payments. The elimination of this 'widow's tax' offset means eligible survivors now receive the full amount of both benefits.
