Monthly stipends paid directly to family caregivers of post-9/11 veterans

Program Overview

The Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) provides a monthly stipend, training, mental health services, and travel expenses to approved family caregivers of eligible veterans. This is paid directly to the caregiver, not the veteran.

โœ… Veteran Eligibility

  • Served on or after September 11, 2001 (post-9/11) OR
  • Served on or before May 7, 1975 (Vietnam-era or earlier)
  • AND has a serious injury or illness incurred/aggravated in line of duty
  • AND needs help with at least 1 Activity of Daily Living (ADL) OR supervision due to residuals of traumatic brain injury

โœ… Caregiver Eligibility

  • At least 18 years old
  • Family member or lives with the veteran full-time
  • Complete VA caregiver training
  • Designated as Primary or Secondary Family Caregiver
Benefits Included

Based on veteran's disability rating and location. Ranges from $800 to $3,800/month (varies by tier and region)

CHAMPVA health insurance for Primary Family Caregiver (if not eligible for other coverage)

Comprehensive caregiver training, mental health services, and respite care

How to Apply
STEP 1
Check Eligibility
Confirm veteran meets service and disability criteria. Call the Caregiver Support Line: 1-855-260-3274
STEP 2
Complete VA Form 10-10CG
Application for Family Caregiver Benefits. Download at va.gov/vaforms
STEP 3
Veteran & Caregiver Sign
Both veteran and caregiver must sign the application. You can designate 1 Primary and up to 2 Secondary Family Caregivers.
STEP 4
Submit to VA Medical Center
Turn in form to your local VA medical center's Caregiver Support Coordinator (CSC). Find yours at caregiver.va.gov
STEP 5
Clinical Assessment
VA will schedule an in-home or telehealth assessment to evaluate veteran's needs and caregiver's ability to provide care
STEP 6
Decision & Training
If approved, complete required training (online or in-person). Stipend begins after training completion.
